Hotel and meetings carbon emission calculation has arrived courtesy of BSI and CarePar™

At BSI we have taken and will continue to take tangible steps to reduce the carbon emissions that our business inevitably generates and so ensure our environmental impact is as low as possible.

In this important area of environmental management, BSI understands its position of influence as being one of driving customer awareness of their carbon footprint in their utilisation of business accommodation and meetings space. To this end, BSI has been working diligently to provide a robust platform that gives trusted and meaningful data in this area.

CarePar™ (carbon emission per available room) – will be that future standard of measurement, the process takes physical and variable data from hotels and venues and uses it to calculate the carbon weight generated in a single room night or period use of a function or meeting room. Over time as hotels re-submit their variable data their indices are recalculated, and reductions in environmental impact logged.

Working closely with our associates at CarePar™, we have defined the Industry Standard in this area which will allow us to respond to the needs of your business in this area without compromise. The CarePAR™ method of calculation and the unit of measurement has been developed by a team of experts drawn from the environmental lobby, the hotel, information technology and travel industries. Each brings to the project skills and insight, the combination uniquely enables CarePAR™ to establish itself as the definitive solution for hoteliers and their clients.

We shall be running the BSI database through the model over the next few months and requesting hotels and venues support the submission of the ‘missing’ data sets. This will allow us to commence reporting on your past and current CarePar status during the summer period. This same data will also enhance your Preferred Hotel Programme structure, as we shall be able to identify, with greater accuracy, properties that meet your own environmental policy targets and aspirations. Hotels will pay a nominal annual fee to CarePar, as BSI have been a guiding principle associate all our core demand properties will receive discount for early system adoption.
